Description

Bill Champlin was not only for many years the distinctive voice of the band Chicago. The singer, songwriter and experienced session musician also gets crowds on their feet with his own bands - thanks to their lively, rhythmically interesting, harmonious and timeless rock.

From childhood, Bill Champlin had only one passion: music. In 1966 he founded the band The Sons Of Champlin. He would not have been the top student in music that he was if he had not had such strong self-belief. The Sons Of Champlin shared the Bay area with other great bands, such as the "Grateful Dead" or "Quicksilver Messenger Service", all preferring on-the-spot improvisations and psychedelic sounds. However their horn-sound and their fondness for catchy soul, funk and rhythm & blues gave them an unmistakable sound.

In 1981, Bill Champlin had his first breakthrough: as a member of "Chicago" - a band, which started off as one of the most ambitious rock-jazz groups in the USA in 1969/70. The band later became one of the biggest names in the rock business with numerous hit songs and successful albums. Their roads were paved with gold and Chicago experienced an unprecedented wave of success.

From now on Bill Champlin worked in three directions. He was still involved in Chicago, who since the nineties have only sporadically got together in the studio or for live concerts. He released a solo album of upbeat, harmonious and perfectly arranged Californian soft rock. Finally he also accumulated the reputation as "musician's musician" by composing, singing, playing guitar, arranging and generally assisting top musicians. Bill Champlin is the proud winner of two Grammy awards: In 1979 for "After the Love Has Gone" and in 1982 for "Turn your Love Around".

The performance in Baden-Baden took place on the 06.10.93.
